Introduction

Future Careers is seeking an experienced Senior Import Controller for a leading global logistics provider based in Durban. This role is ideal for a seasoned seafreight professional with strong end-to-end import controlling experience, a solid understanding of international freight movements, and the ability to manage complex shipments in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in coordinating import cargo, ensuring compliance, maintaining data accuracy, and delivering exceptional service to clients while supporting and guiding junior team members.

Description

  • Manage end-to-end forwarding of import shipments, ensuring smooth cargo movement and adherence to timelines.

  • Coordinate clearing of import shipments, ensuring compliance with customs and regulatory requirements.

  • Oversee transport coordination, liaising with carriers and service providers for timely delivery.

  • Handle invoicing and administration of shipment files, maintaining accurate documentation and data integrity.

  • Arrange insurance cover and manage claims to ensure prompt resolution and minimal client disruption.

  • Provide guidance and support to Import Controllers and Learners, contributing to team development.

  • Ensure compliance with the quality management system and internal operational procedures.

  • Perform ad hoc operational and administrative duties as required.

Education Profile

  • Matric (Grade 12)

  • 2-year freight forwarding qualification (NQF Level 4 or 5) or equivalent

  • 5-7 years’ recent import controlling experience in clearing & forwarding, with proven end-to-end execution

  • Strong knowledge of INCOTERMS and import freight movement coordination

  • Experience with seafreight shipment types and insurance/claims processes

  • Understanding of commercial, transport, carrier, depot, and statutory documentation

  • Ability to interpret rate structures, currencies, and international codes

  • Computer literate (MS Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with strong leadership ability

  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and client-service mindset

  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and time management in a deadline-driven environment

  • Ability to work under pressure and handle demanding customers

  • Knowledge of RCG (Reporting of Conveyances and Goods) and ShipShape

  • Financial acumen and strong operational understanding
